In 1984, fifteen members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated living in the Sandhills area joined together in hopes of bringing a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha to Southern Pines, North Carolina. The charter members were Nelda Caddell, Peggie Chavis Caple, Nancy Coor, Brenda Davis, Lillie Hicks, Alice Jackson, Frances Jackson Johnson, Dorothy Lutz, Cynthia McDonald, Vanessa McNeill, Edith Moore, Juanita Hinton Morrison, Patricia Ross, Laura Shropshire, and Margaret Thompson. The group named themselves the Sandhills Sisters and began the work of enacting the sorority’s mission of service to all mankind.
On June 15, 1985, a chartering ceremony was held at the Resort Centre in Southern Pines, presided by Mrs. Barbara W. Davis, the 10th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director. The ceremony, which was attended by members of the local community as well as representatives from Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters around the region, announced the name of the new chapter, Omicron Omega Omega, and marked the formal beginning of the chapter’s legacy of service to the Sandhills area.
Under the direction of visionary leader and first President of Omicron Omega Omega, Nancy Wooten Coor, Omicron Omega Omega began a decorated history of service. Being a distinguished provider of service herself, Nancy Coor served as the president of the Omicron Omega Omega chapter for 13 years, as International Program Coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic Region, participated on a number of different committees and served as a workshop presenter at the regional and national levels.
Since its inception, Omicron Omega Omega has participated in and spearheaded numerous service initiatives. These initiatives include (but are not limited to) direct support to families in need, community health and economic education, tutoring programs, recognition of community leaders and an ongoing scholarship program awarded to area high school students, service projects (Christmas boxes for the needy), a career workshop, a dance for teens, the Martin Luther King Memorial Walk, Shoes for Souls, a winter coat drive, and a habitat for humanity team build day. The Omicron Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha proudly serves Moore, Hoke, Montgomery, Richmond and surrounding counties.
Omicron Omega Omega has partnered with many local agencies and organizations to fulfill mutual service goals. The list of organizations supported includes: American Cancer Society, Boys and Girls Club of the Sandhills, Habitat for Humanity, Friend to Friend Crisis Services, Hoke County Department of Social Services, Hoke County Open Door Soup Kitchen, Hoke County Schools, Hoke County Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center, Moore County Department of Social Services, Moore County Housing Authority, Pinelake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Sandhills Coalition for Human Care, Sandhills Track Club, Southern Pines Civic Club, West Southern Pines Men’s Service Club and many more.
While a provider of continued support for nationwide charities and programs, many of Omicron Omega Omega’s programs were formed around the Sandhills area. One of the most notable programs being Omicron Omega Omega’s annual Senior Citizen Luncheon which recognizes and supports the local senior citizens. This holiday event proves rewarding for the area senior citizens and Omicron Omega Omega members alike functioning as one of the most highly attended events of the year. The luncheon consists of a professionally catered sit down meal, fun, fellowship, choral selections, and a surprise appearance by Santa Claus himself. The program culminates by each guest receiving a Christmas gift from a corresponding chapter member. This luncheon is Omicron Omega Omega’s way of showing appreciation for each person in attendance. It serves as a means to honor and respect the lives that our seniors have lived and the hard work and strength that it has required to pave the way before us.
